Deployment means limited equipment. It doesn't mean limited training. The research on bodyweight strength training shows you can maintain — and in some cases build — strength with nothing but floor space and something to hang from.
The Bodyweight Strength Hierarchy
Not all bodyweight exercises are equal. You need to match the exercise difficulty to your strength level or you're just doing cardio.
Push progression: Wall push-ups → incline push-ups → floor push-ups → diamond push-ups → archer push-ups → one-arm push-up progressions. Most people stall at standard push-ups and wonder why they don't get stronger. Add difficulty, not just volume.
Pull progression: Doorframe rows → table rows → bar rows (low bar) → bar rows (waist height) → full pull-ups → weighted pull-ups (use your pack). The pull-up is the deployment MVP. Find something to hang from — a beam, a doorframe pull-up bar, a tree branch.
Leg progression: Bodyweight squats → split squats → Bulgarian split squats → pistol squat progressions → shrimp squats. Single-leg work compensates for the lack of external load. A full pistol squat is roughly equivalent to a 1.5x bodyweight barbell squat in terms of relative strength demand.
Core: Hollow body holds, dead bugs, L-sit progressions, dragon flags. No equipment needed. No excuses.
The Deployment Template
Day 1 — Push + Pull: Push-up progression (4x8-15), pull-up progression (4x max reps), dip variation (between chairs, boxes), core finisher
Day 2 — Legs + Conditioning: Squat progression (4x8-15/leg), lunge variation (3x20 steps), burpee interval finisher (30/30 x 8 Entries), loaded carry (ruck or sandbag if available)
Day 3 — Full Body Hold: 20-minute Hold: 10 push-ups, 10 air squats, 5 pull-ups, 10 walking lunges. Score total Entries. This is your maintenance session.
The Ruck Is Your Barbell
If you have a ruck and weight (plates, water jugs, sandbag), you have a gym. Ruck squats, ruck good mornings, ruck overhead press, ruck loaded carries. The ruck is the most versatile piece of deployment equipment you own.
THE LINE's deployment season phase adjusts everything — reduced volume, bodyweight-only exercise selection, maintenance focus. The engine knows you're deployed. It programs accordingly.
